The Honourable Ralph Steinhauer reads the Speech from the Throne in his full Native regalia on January 23, 1975. Courtesy of Provincial Archives of Alberta, 33167/3.

The Honourable Ralph Steinhauer was only the first Indigenous appointment to a vice-regal office in this country. While there has yet to be an Indigenous governor general, Manitoba (the Honourable W. Yvon Dumont, 1993–1999), Ontario (the Honourable James K. Bartleman, 2002–2007), British Columbia (the Honourable Steven L. Point, 2007–2012), and New Brunswick (the Honourable Graydon Nicholas, 2009–2014) have all had Indigenous representatives of the Queen. All of these lieutenant governors used their time in office to highlight Indigenous issues, as well as to engage Canadians in First Nations’ issues and in their shared history.

Lieutenant governors are appointed by governors general on the recommendation of prime ministers. Paradoxically, while the country has experienced for some time terrible federal/First Nations relations, it is the various prime ministers of the day (Pierre Trudeau, Brian Mulroney, Jean Chrétien, and Stephen Harper) who must be credited for the vice-regal appointments of Indigenous representatives of the Queen in the provinces.
